Kares Le Roy has spent the past two decades travelling. On foot, on horseback, by motorcycle, on the back of a bus or behind the wheel of his own vehicle, he has crossed some of Asia’s most remote territories. His work has taken him from the plains of the Middle East to the steppes of Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, through ancient Persia and the Arabian Peninsula, immersing himself in local communities during extended stays.

At 45, he is the author of four photography books: 56,000 Kilometres, Ashayer, Iran Immortel and Cabane{s}, as well as two short films, Bajay and Berkutchi. Since 2011, his photographs have been exhibited in galleries, cultural institutions, museums and prestigious hotels, including the Grand Palais and the Lutetia in Paris, the Musée des Arts Asiatiques in Nice, and the Institut Culturel Bernard Magrez in Bordeaux.

Over the years, he has developed an approach rooted in time, encounters and transmission. Inspired by the Persian poetry of Omar Khayyam, Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, and the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, he explores cultures, myths and traditions that endure across generations. His photographs place particular emphasis on faces, gestures and ways of life inherited from a past that remains very much alive.

Iran lies at the heart of this approach. For more than ten years, Kares Le Roy travelled the country from end to end, sometimes returning repeatedly to the same regions, villages and families. This enduring attachment to places stems from a patient, almost obsessive search: for a particular quality of light, a more intense presence, a face capable of evoking the great narratives that have shaped the Persian imagination.

Over the years, Iran thus became far more than a place in which to work. It became a space for creation, where history, mythology and everyday life sometimes seem to converge within a single image.
